Master of Chinese Medicine

The aim of the programme is to cultivate and enhance students’ competence in applying Chinese medicine theories and methods into clinical practice as well as in research and development of Chinese medicine. Through taking the programme, students’ abilities to comprehend and master the theoretical knowledge of Chinese medicine will be strengthened. Through a co-ordinated approach of teaching the knowledge of various Chinese medicine specialties and the exposure to the latest advancement of research in Chinese medicine, the abilities and standards of the students will be further enhanced for the application of Chinese medicine theories in clinical practice and in research and development of Chinese medicine.

Upon completion of the programme, students will master the abilities in diagnosis and treatment, and are expected to apply their knowledge and techniques skilfully in clinical practice. The programme aims to train a group of quality personnel in medical and healthcare services, as well as in research and technological development of Chinese medicine.

Programme of Study

For full-time basis, the normal programme of study for the programme is one year, and the maximum study period is two years. For part-time basis, the normal programme of study for the programme is two years, and the maximum study period is three years. Lectures, practicum and dissertation are arranged.

Structure

The programme is comprised of common courses and concentration courses. There are altogether three concentrations, namely Studies and Applications of Internal Chinese Medicine, Studies and Applications of Acupuncture, Studies and Applications of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Tui Na. Common courses are for all students of the programme whereas concentration courses are designed for those who choose to specialise in the particular concentrations.

The total study unit of the programme is 32 (excluding that of elective course), with 11 for the common courses and 21 for the concentration courses.

  MCM 7030 Thinking Approach and Methodology of Chinese Medicine 3 units
  MCM 7040 Research Methodology and Practice in Chinese Medicine 3 units
  MCM 7060 Formulation Theories and Practices of Chinese Medicinal Formulae 3 units
  MCM 7320 Clinical Applications of the Different Theories of Chinese Medicine 2 units
     
II. Concentration Courses 21 units
  Students are required to choose one of the following concentrations: 
  (a) Studies and Applications of Internal Chinese Medicine  
  MCM 7070 Studies and Applications of the Science of Seasonal Febrile Diseases 3 units
  MCM 7100 Theoretical and Clinical Studies on the Miscellaneous Diseases of Internal Medicine 4 units
  MCM 7120 Clinical Practice—Studies and Applications of Internal Chinese Medicine 5 units
  MCM 7260 Dissertation* 6 units
  MCM 7330 Studies and Applications of the Theory of Zhong Jing 3 units
     
  (b) Studies and Applications of Acupuncture  
  MCM 7080 Examination and Diagnosis of Musculoskeletal Disorders 3 units
  MCM 7130 Clinical Acupuncture—Advanced Level 4 units
  MCM 7150 Clinical Practice—Studies and Applications of Acupuncture 5 units
  MCM 7260 Dissertation* 6 units
  MCM 7340 Advance in Acupuncture Research 3 units
     
  (c) Studies and Applications of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Tui Na  
  MCM 7080 Examination and Diagnosis of Musculoskeletal Disorders 3 units

  MCM 7260 Dissertation* 6 units
  MCM 7350 Tui Na Therapy of Chinese Medicine 3 units

* Students can take either (1) MCM 7260 Dissertation or (2) MCM 7290 Mechanism of Action and Safe Application of Chinese Medicines and MCM 7300 Advancement in Contemporary Chinese Medicines.
 
Elective Course**
 In order to widen the students’ horizon and strengthen their knowledge base, an elective course will be provided:
  MCM 7280 Marketing and Management of Industry for Chinese Medicines 2 units
** 1. Commencement of class is subject to the number of students enrolled.
2. This elective course is optional for students to study.
3. The academic results of the elective course obtained by the students will be recorded in the transcript (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) without GPA grading and the units of the elective course will not be added to the total units.
