Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in China Studies – Economics Concentration

China is now the second largest economy in the world. Impressive growth has been achieved since the launch of economic reform in 1979. Alongside the rapid economic growth are social, environmental and technological issues that pose challenges to the sustainability of development in China. China’s integration to the world economy and changing role in the international arena have aroused much academic and business interests. Its importance to Hong Kong can never be over-emphasised. 

The Economics Concentration of the BSocSc (Hons) in China Studies aims to meet a growing need for a programme oriented towards the Chinese economy. Apart from solid knowledge about Chinese economy, students will be equipped with economic theories and analytical tools useful for formulating business strategies and assessing government policies. 

Specifically, it aims

  1. to provide a coherent academic programme on the Chinese economy, building on a solid foundation of economic theories and analytical tools;
  2. to equip students with immediately employable knowledge and with potential for future career development in occupations related to the Chinese economy; and
  3. to develop students’ analytical ability, critical thinking capacity for career enhancement in teaching, research and postgraduate studies.

The structure of the curriculum is as follows:

# Students may take additional GE courses (of Level 1 or 2) in any categories to fulfil the “Free Electives” requirement but only a maximum of 6 units will be counted towards the fulfilment of the “Free Electives” requirement.

  * In terms of the Putonghua requirement, LANG1005 Elementary Putonghua (or its equivalence as defined by the university) is the prerequisite for the Summer Sojourn, and we require all China Studies majors to pass LANG1005 Elementary Putonghua in the second semester of the third year before the Summer Sojourn. In addition, China Studies majors are required to get at least a B grade in the Putonghua Course taken during the Summer Sojourn. Students who fail to meet this requirement have to pass LANG1006 Intermediate Putonghua or its equivalence as defined by the university.
