Master of Chinese Medicine

The aim of the programme is to cultivate and enhance students’ competence in applying Chinese medicine theories and methods into clinical practice as well as in research and development of Chinese medicine. Through taking the programme, students’ ability to comprehend and master the theoretical knowledge of Chinese medicine will be strengthened. Through a co-ordinated approach of teaching the knowledge of various Chinese medicine specialties and the exposure to the latest advancement of research in Chinese medicine, the abilities and standards of the students will be further enhanced for the application of Chinese medicine theories in clinical practice and in research and development of Chinese medicine.

In addition to a number of common courses, students are required to choose a specialised area of studies, known as the concentration courses. They have to choose one out of the three concentrations: (1) Studies and Applications of Internal Chinese Medicine (ICM), (2) Studies and Applications of Acupuncture (ACU), and (3) Studies and Applications of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Tui Na (OT). Upon completion of the programme, students of ICM, ACU and OT will have mastered the abilities in diagnosis and treatment, and are expected to apply their knowledge and techniques skilfully in clinical practice. The programme aims to train a group of quality personnel in medical and healthcare services, as well as in research and technological development of Chinese medicine.

Programme of Study

For full-time basis, the normal programme of study for the programme is one year, and the maximum study period is two years. For part-time basis, the normal programme of study for the programme is two years, and the maximum study period is three years. Lectures, practicum and dissertation are arranged.

Structure

The programme is comprised of common courses and concentration courses. There are altogether three concentrations, namely Studies and Applications of Internal Chinese Medicine, Studies and Applications of Acupuncture, Studies and Applications of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Tui Na. Common courses are for all students of the programme whereas concentration courses are designed for those who choose to specialise in the particular concentrations.

The total study unit of the programme is 32 (excluding that of elective course), with 11 for the common courses and 21 for the concentration courses.

* Students can take either (1) MCM 7260 Dissertation or (2) MPS 7030 Mechanism of Action and Safe Application of Chinese Medicines and MPS 7070 Advancement in Contemporary Chinese Medicines.
 
Elective Course**
 In order to widen the students’ horizon and strengthen their knowledge base, an elective course will be provided:
  MCM 7280 Marketing and Management of Industry for Chinese Medicines 2 units
** 1. Commencement of class is subject to the number of students enrolled.
2. This elective course is optional for students to study.
3. The academic results of the elective course obtained by the students will be recorded in the transcript (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) without GPA grading and the units of the elective course will not be added to the total units.
