Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Humanities

The BA (Hons) in Humanities programme is dedicated to giving broad liberal arts education. It consists of three distinct characteristics:

  1. Interdisciplinarity: All the Humanities core courses employ diverse approaches to the study of Humanities. Cultural Studies, art criticism, language, literature, philosophy,  media studies have an equal place in the courses.
  2. Bilingual Teaching and Learning: While not every course is taught in a bilingual environment, Humanities students will divide their time between English language and Chinese language tuition. The Programme offers a curriculum that emphasizes training students to be competent in both English and Chinese.
  3. Cross-culturalism: Almost all the Humanities core courses examine issues of cultures, values, literature, arts and ideas from a cross-cultural perspective.

  This concentration allows students to: (1) acquire solid knowledge and literacy of cultures from the classical, contemporary and comparative perspectives of diverse traditions via different changing socio-historical periods; and (2) apply knowledge, theories and research skills to engage with critical analysis and reflection concerning various cultural issues.

Remarks:

(1) HUM students who want to have a Concentration should select 21 units from one of the above two groups. They can utilize 3 units of their free elective units and 18 units of their major electives to meet up the 21 units Concentration requirements set by the university. The balance of the 6 units (24 units – 18 units) of their major electives should go to two courses in another group for the purpose of broadening their study horizons.

(2) Students who do not opt for a Concentration will choose at least three courses in each of the above two groups and come up with 24 units as their major electives.
