Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Chinese Medicine

The programme adopts a pragmatic approach to strengthen students’ knowledge and skills in pharmaceutical sciences in Chinese medicine. It aims at upgrading students’ ability to comprehend and master the theoretical knowledge of CM pharmacy so that their research ability and problem solving skills can be enhanced through learning of the latest research methodologies and technologies. The programme helps train a generation of modern and scientific professionals in applied CM pharmacy, especially in the areas of product development, quality assurance, drug safety assessment, production management and trading of Chinese medicines or/and healthcare products.

Programme of Study

For full-time basis, the normal programme of study for the programme is one year, and the maximum study period is two years. For part-time basis, the normal programme of study for the programme is two years, and the maximum study period is three years. Lectures, laboratory practice and dissertation are arranged.

Structure

It is a 29-unit programme comprised of Required Courses (23 units) and Dissertation (6 units).

Students who have not previously studied Chinese Medicine or Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine must take, in addition to the above, a supplementary course titled "Overview on Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica".

  MPS 7020 Utilization of Medicinal Plant Resources and Advanced Pharmacognosy 3 units
  MPS 7030 Mechanism of Action and Safe Application of Chinese Medicines 3 units
  MPS 7040 Methods and Techniques for Quality Control of Chinese Medicines 2 units
  MPS 7070 Advancement in Contemporary Chinese Medicines 3 units
  MPS 7100 Marketing and Management of Industry for Chinese Medicines 2 units
  MPS 7110 Translational Medicine and Drug Discovery: Theory and Practice (Chinese Medicines) 3 units
  MPS 7120 Advanced Pharmaceutics in Chinese Medicines 2 units
  MPS 7131 Laboratory Practice in Chinese Medicines 1 unit
  MPS 7132 Laboratory Practice in Chinese Medicines 1 unit

* Students can take either (1) MPS 7081/MPS 7082 Dissertation or (2) MCM 7030 Thinking Approach and Methodology of Chinese Medicine and MCM 7060 Formulation Theories and Practices of Chinese Medicinal Formulae.
 
Supplementary Course (for those who have not previously studied CM or CM Pharmacy):
  MPS 7520 Overview on Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica 0 unit
The academic results of the supplementary course obtained by the students will be recorded in the transcript (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) without GPA grading.
