Master of Science in Information Technology Management

The programme aims to educate IT managers and professionals who possess technical and management knowledge for designing, developing and managing IT systems. It provides a transformational experience in integrating the technological and managerial sides of IT.

On completion of the programme, students should be able to achieve the following programme intended learning outcomes:

  1. Explain the core technical and management concepts and apply these concepts in an integrated manner for IT management.
  2. Explain and apply the current methodologies in some selected areas in IT management (such as IT enterprise management, knowledge and information management, Internet and web technologies and/or, business analytics).
  3. Identify business needs and explain the process of transforming business needs into IT systems.

Applicants seeking admission to the programme should normally: (1) possess a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, business or other relevant fields from a recognized university or equivalent qualification; and (2) if applicants did not use English as the medium of learning in their bachelor's degree programmes, they should satisfy any one of the following English proficiency requirements: (i) IELTS overall band score of at least 6.0; (ii) TOEFL score of at least 537 (paper-based) or 74 (Internet-based); (iii) Other equivalent qualifications (e.g. CET-6 score of at least 450).

Students can select two-year part-time or one-year full-time study mode. They will attend classes on weekday evenings or Saturdays. Some classes may be conducted in daytime for full-time students.

The programme offers the following types of courses/projects:

1. Required courses—These courses cover the foundations of IT and management.

2. Elective courses—The elective courses are divided into four streams and MSc Project and Research:

  1. Stream 1—IT Enterprise Management: This stream focuses on the principles of management in the IT context. It covers the current methodologies for managing IT projects.
  2. Stream 2—Knowledge and Information Management: This stream focuses on the principles of using IT and intelligent techniques to gather, discover, analyse, organize, manage and store information and knowledge. It covers the current methodologies for designing, developing and managing knowledge and information systems.
  3. Stream 3—Internet and Web Technologies: This stream focuses on the principles of the Internet and the Web. It covers the current internetworking protocols/standards and the current methodologies for designing, developing and managing Internet applications and systems.
  4. Stream 4—Business Analytics: This stream focuses on how to gather, process, analyse and interpret data in order to optimize business process and support strategic decision making.
  5. MSc Project and Research: Students undertake MSc project and/or research (e.g. research on current IT problem, development of an IT application, or survey of a current IT topic. etc.

In addition, if a student does not have adequate programming experience, she/he is required to take a 32-hour Supplementary Programming course.

Requirements

Each student is required to complete 29 units as follows:

  1. 8 units of required courses: If a student has a bachelor’s degree in IT or closely related fields or taken equivalent courses, she/he must substitute the required course “Foundations of Information Technology” by an elective course.
  2. 21 units of elective courses: Each student must select at least three streams among the four streams and successfully complete at least one course in each selected stream.
  3. Supplementary Programming course: If a student does not have adequate programming experience, she/he is required to take a 32-hour Supplementary Programming course.
