This course introduces the fundamental concepts and theories in social psychology, a field that explores how personal characteristics and decisions are shaped by social situations and the forces that shape patterns of interaction. The course aims to highlight the relevance of social psychology for understanding everyday life but also to appreciate how social factors have great influence on individual choices and preferences, including major issues like gender segregation, social justice and economic activity. In addition, this course examines the empirical reasoning and techniques behind experimental methods, the cornerstone methodology in social psychology to produce valid, repeatable tests of hypotheses. Students will learn the advantages and disadvantages of this method and be able to critique study designs and data analyses.
