This course provides undergraduate students with essential research methodologies used across the social sciences, with particular relevance to sociology, political science, area studies, and human geography. Students will develop foundational skills in formulating research puzzles and applying both qualitative and quantitative approaches, with an emphasis on qualitative techniques (e.g., interviews, participant observation, content analysis, focus groups) and basic quantitative literacy (e.g., descriptive statistics, survey design and analysis, data visualization, basic statistical analysis). The course covers research design, data collection strategies, analytical frameworks and ethical considerations commonly employed in social inquiry. Through readings, case studies and hands-on assignments, students will learn to formulate research questions, select appropriate methodologies, and critically evaluate existing research. While tailored for social science majors, this course is also suitable for students from other disciplines interested in understanding social research principles and practices.
