GEOG2006 Earth Systems: Shaping Landscapes explores the processes that form and transform Earth’s surface, including plate tectonics, minerals, rocks, the rock cycle, weathering, mass wasting, erosion, soil formation, water movement, and coastal change. Students will learn how Earth materials and surface processes interact to shape landscapes across different spatial and temporal scales. The course combines lectures, laboratory sessions, and a field trip to develop students’ ability to identify rocks and minerals, interpret landforms, analyze maps, observe soils, and recognize landscape processes in real-world settings. These activities connect Earth systems concepts to practical issues such as water resources, water quality, soil erosion, soil quality, land degradation, coastal management, disaster risk reduction, climate risk, extreme weather, and sea level rise. Through hands-on investigation and field observation, students will develop Earth systems thinking and apply geoscience knowledge to understanding environmental change, landscape hazards, natural resources, and the sustainable management of human and physical environments.
