ENGL3317 Sociolinguistic and Cultural Immersion in Hong Kong Language and Literature (3 units)
The course aims to study different communities living and working in the territory, including analysis of their linguistic and cultural environments as well as representations of these same communities in selected social and literary texts. Adopting ethnographic, sociolinguistic, as well as literary approaches, this course draws attention to groups who are often overlooked in the narratives of Hong Kong: immigrants (including people from southeast Asian countries, English-speaking countries, and others), ethnic minorities, migrant workers, refugees, people with disabilities, as well as the LGBTQ+ community. This course addresses specific aspects of these groups’ history in the city, including their members’ portrayal across a wide range of texts, social contexts, and including access to their own creative representations and voices. Students taking this course will be equipped with perspectives capable of appreciating a more multi-faceted and inclusive Hong Kong society.
