Typography is all about words; it is the art and technique of arranging letters to make written language legible, readable, and appealing to look at. As such typography represents one of the most basic challenges to any graphic designer: how to work with text as a visual medium.
VART2506 Typography introduces key principles of typography and practices their application—e.g. typefaces classification and selection, grid systems, typographic conventions, typographic systems and others. While all these principles apply across digital and analogue formats, the focus of this course is on printed matter.
Please note that this course does not include teaching of graphic design computer software. Knowledge of such software is not required to complete the projects, but may turn out helpful.
