PCMD1065 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3 units)
- Co-requisite:
- PCMD1057 Biomedical Sciences Laboratory IIB
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of molecular biology and biochemistry. The structures, compositions and functions of macromolecules including proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids will be introduced, followed by the mechanisms of enzymes. Furthermore, students will explore the key metabolic pathways and their relevance to diseases. Basic concepts of gene expression, regulation and manipulation will be introduced, allowing students to gain insight into the common techniques used in molecular biology, with special emphasis on the applications in medicine and pharmacology. The knowledge will be reinforced by practical sessions in PCMD1057 Biomedical Sciences Laboratory IIB. Students' learning experience will be enhanced through group discussions and case studies.
