This course aims to examine the linguistic, cultural and historical evolution of Cantonese since the early nineteenth century and how different characteristics of Cantonese relate to Hong Kong society at different intervals. Students will gain a deeper understanding about the language they use, its environment and its linguistic developments. Topics like the nature and manifestations of the changes that Cantonese has undergone, the relationship between language and identity, and interactions between different socio-cultural and pragmatic variants will be discussed, through which students will develop their critical thinking skills and abilities to appreciate language continuity and innovation.
