This course aims for students to understand the history and development of generative AI in the broader context of artificial intelligence and explore how it is being used by journalists and newsrooms in the newsgathering, news production and distribution processes as well as potential uses in the future. Students will also study the ethical and legal issues surrounding generative AI to build a framework for understanding responsible use. Students will practice using established generative AI software, such as ChatGPT and Midjourney, to create content and will produce a multimedia work of generative AI-assisted journalism as a final project. By the end of the course, students will be able to effectively use generative AI as an assistant in the news production process.
