Metal is the second most common material to build structures with in the visual arts—second only to wood. Like woodworking, metalworking generally is divided into the categories of cutting, and, joining, but additionally it also allows for forming, which allows for entirely new approaches as represented e.g. in sheet metal. This course will introduce the use of hand tools as well as portable and stationary power tools for metalworking. A large proportion of the course will be dedicated to welding as a core technique in metal constructions.
The course is practice-based and will focus on technical demonstration and a continuous studio practice to inspire in the students to think fluidly about how ideas may develop into completed “products”.
