Illustration is a fundament technique in the visual arts as it provides tools for observation, integration, and expression. Apart from its formal functions such as providing information and commentary, narration and persuasion, it allows creatives to establish their own creative identity through manipulation of images with different techniques.  

VART2497 Basic Illustration aims to focus on the basic techniques of drawing for the illustrator. It introduces various drawing techniques and tools and equips them with skills and knowledge to create works in different context. Throughout the process, students are encouraged to explore the specificity of tools and establish their own visual language in illustration.  

The majority of the course consists of skill-based training, yet the design assignments also require students to articulate ideas and integrate different skills into a well-planned creative strategy.  

Please note that this course does not include teaching of graphic design computer software. Knowledge of such software is not required to complete the projects, but may turn out helpful.
