SOWK1006 Human Development through the Life Span (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
The course provides a comprehensive understanding of human development across the lifespan, from infancy and childhood to adolescence, adulthood, ageing and later life. It examines how biological, psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors interact to shape individual growth, behaviour, relationships, and psychological well-being at different development stages. Major developmental theories, key milestones, life transitions, and common challenges across the life course will be introduced and critically discussed. The course also highlights the relevance of human development knowledge to social work and human service practice, particularly in understanding developmental needs, risks, strengths, and appropriate professional interventions, such as early childhood development and education. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own developmental experiences and consider how personal growth, family relationships, social contexts, and life events influence human development over time.
