This course examines the concepts of sex and gender as they are interpreted through and enacted within the social and cross-cultural contexts of contemporary life. It critically examines biological and cultural beliefs about sex and gender and applies theoretical perspectives to analyses of contemporary issues, including the representation of gender and sexuality in new media, the organisation of work and social institutions, and the impact of globalisation and transnational social change. The course will investigate the relationship between gender, sexuality, and power, with particular attention to questions of identity, wellbeing, social inclusion, and justice.
