This course will examine major debates on global social, economic, and political transformations. It has three major parts. The first part will study major theories of globalisation, exploring different social thinkers' perspectives on socioeconomic arrangements and personal existence in a globalise world. The second part will focus on the institutional formation of global governance. It examines the capacities and limitations of global institutions in responding to financial crises, pandemics, environmental challenges and climate change. The third part will center on the localisation of the global. Beginning with socio-geographical theories, it highlights global spatial differentiation issues such as inequality and, uneven development, cultural diffusion, and international migration. These topics are further explored through case studies, helping students connect global forces and grand narratives to local contexts and their own social environments -- specifically, the situation of Hong Kong as a global city.
