This course aims to introduce students to the sociological study of youth by examining young people’s experiences, identities, and challenges across different social, cultural and historical contexts. While drawing on foundational theories and research developed in Western societies, the course places strong emphasis on regional and local examples, particular in Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, and Asia more broadly. Students will explore how major social institutions—family, school, labour markets, media, and the state—shape youth socialisation, opportunities, and constraints. Through critical engagement with concepts, case studies, and empirical research, the course encourages students to analyse youth as active agents embedded in structural conditions, and to understand contemporary youth issues through a sociological lens. Ultimately, students will develop the conceptual and analytical tools necessary to interpret the dynamics of youth transitions, inequalities, and policy responses in rapidly changing societies.
