This course examines how international migration intersects with race and ethnicity to produce distinct patterns of belonging, exclusion, and inequality. Particular attention will be given to migrant groups and migration issues most relevant to the regional context of the course. Topics include:

1. major theories of international migration;
2. contemporary patterns and trends of migration;
3. racialization and ethnic boundary-making;
4. migrant incorporation, assimilation, and integration;
5. exclusion, marginalization, and inter-group conflict;
6. feminization of migration and care work;
7. citizenship, border regimes, and legal forms of exclusion;
8. immigration, emigration, and return migration.
