RELI3115 Theological Ethics (3 units)
This course aims to lay a foundation for RPE students in area D, ethics and society. Students will gain a basic knowledge of major Christian ethicists such as Thomas Aquinas, Alphonse Liguori, H. Richard Niebuhr, Margaret Farley, John Paul II, Jean Porter, Stanley Hauerwas, James Keenan, Kwok Pui Lan, and James Gustafson. The role of morality in the Christian life will guide learning. Different meta-ethical and theoretical approaches will be discussed, including the significant differences between Roman Catholic and Protestant approaches to ethics. Finally, the course will also examine more recent developments in theological ethics on specific areas of applied ethics such as biomedical disputes, changes in sexual ethics, just wars and peace, racial justice and economic inequality.
