This course explores contemporary ethical issues that are especially relevant to Hong Kong society and beyond. Ethical issues across different stages and dimensions of human life, including birth and procreation, sex and love, work and meaning, inheritance, death, grief, and public commemoration will be explored. Topics may include procreation and antinatalism, the moral status of future persons, casual sex and intimate relationships, marriage and family, meaningful work and the future of work, the commercialization of intimacy, posthumous harm, inheritance, grief and technology, and monuments and public memorials. Particular attention will be given to how technology, social institutions, and changing cultural norms shape ethical debates about gender inequality, social justice, decent work, human dignity, fair society, intergenerational justice, and public memory. Accordingly, this course should enable students to (1) conduct an in-depth study of contemporary ethical problems, (2) sharpen their skills of moral reasoning and moral discernment, and (3) develop a better understanding of the nature and social significance of issues in practical ethics.
