JOUR7390 Reporting Gender Issues (3 units)

This advanced reporting course develops students' gender-sensitive journalism expertise through theoretical foundations and professional practice. Students will examine how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality and other complex identities in contemporary journalism. Students will build practical competencies in gender-sensitive reporting techniques through critical analysis of professional works of reporting and by applying techniques to their own reporting and writing. Students will also examine topical issues that impact all genders and follow current events, including stories on gender equality, systemic discrimination, gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ rights and climate justice through regional and global case studies. This course emphasizes both journalistic excellence and responsible coverage, preparing students to apply innovative and ethical reporting skills to issues of gender, break stereotypes and become better journalists in the process.
