This course develops students’ advanced skills in finding, gathering, analysing and producing news and feature stories for professional journalism practice. Building on prior training in news reporting and writing, this course introduces specialised reporting and beat coverage, with emphasis on the Hong Kong context and reporting Hong Kong for local and international audiences. Students will strengthen their ability to generate original story ideas, apply advanced journalistic tools and conduct in-depth interviews supported by credible research and background reporting. The course also develops students’ capacity to report more complex story forms, including breaking news coverage, explainers and reaction pieces, as well as effective use of digital and social media tools for journalism. Emphasis is placed on editorial judgement, ethical decision-making, source management and professional standards. Students will analyse local, regional and international news coverage to understand framing, agenda-setting and the social impact of journalism as well as advanced writing and reporting techniques. The course is designed to support students’ concurrent practicum work and to prepare them for professional internships, honours projects and future careers in journalism.
