The study of culture will be conducted in a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary manner. Contemporary cultural issues, especially those in Hong Kong, will be discussed in relation to the cultural translations and interactions between China and the world. Drawing upon philosophy, anthropology, sociology, critical theory, literary theory, postmodernism, and postcolonialism, the course introduces students to diverse ways of understanding culture and its role in shaping human experience. Through critical engagement with questions of identity, representation, diversity, power and social change, students will cultivate cultural awareness, global citizenship, critical literacy, and lifelong learning, contributing to quality education. The course also develops sensitivity to cultural and social
inequalities, equal opportunities, and social inclusion, contributing to reduced inequalities. Students will further explore how culture contributes to public discourse, civic participation, justice, and inclusive societies in contemporary contexts, contributing to peace, justice and strong institutions.
