This course seeks to provide students with a foundational understanding of the historical evolution, formal and stylistic features, genres, functions, and significance of Chinese painting and calligraphy during imperial China. The course employs a chronological and thematic structure, integrating a practical workshop that emphasizes research and writing skills while utilizing digital tools. Students will examine calligraphic styles and significant genres in Chinese painting—including landscapes, bird-and-flower, figures, and portraits—along with key artists and prevalent themes within pertinent historical, social, and cultural contexts. We will explore the relevance of traditional art to contemporary art-making, the impact of digital technology on the study of art history, and the display of Chinese painting and calligraphy. The course also aims to increase students’ understanding of various art historical perspectives on the subject and to provide them with the necessary skills to analyze, research, and write about Chinese painting and calligraphy. Developing a curatorial proposal will encourage students to engage in visual, creative, and intellectual thinking. Course materials and assessments are designed to engage with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging students to connect their academic interests to these global priorities. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, industry, innovation and infrastructure development, gender equality, quality education, responsible consumption and production, and sustainable city.
