This course introduces students to the history of modern European colonialism in Asia, with a primary focus on the British, French, and Dutch empires India and Southeast Asia from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. It begins by introducing the mobile world of the Indian Ocean and the networks through which goods, people, ideas, cuisines, and material objects circulated. The course then explores tools of colonial rule, including violence, the employment of intermediaries, and knowledge as a form of social control, as well as the experience of living in colonial societies. Lastly, we will consider the relationship between colonialism and nationalism and the long road to decolonisation. By the end of the course, students should have a broad understanding of the profound ways in which the experience of colonialism transformed societies, cultures, power structures, and institutions across Asia and Europe.
