This course explores current issues in Hong Kong and China through the intersections of art, cultural heritage, and creative industries, examining their implications for societal development. Students will investigate themes such as gender equality, ecology, education, learning opportunities, multiculturalism, the art market, fashion, tourism, and heritage preservation through the lenses of art, objects, and exhibitions. By illuminating how these creative expressions reflect contemporary developments, the course seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the needs of diverse urban communities. The course will include guest lectures and exhibition excursions, with students engaging in group community projects that address relevant current issues specific to Hong Kong and China. Course materials and assessments are designed to engage with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging students to connect their academic interests to these global priorities. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, good health and well-being, industry, innovation and public infrastructure, reduce inequalities, gender equality, quality education, and sustainable city and community.
