GEOG4046 Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation (3 units)

Remote sensing is the science of acquiring information about physical objects from a distance by measuringe the reflected or emitted electromagnetic radiation. Each kind of Earth material has its own spectral signature, which enables us to discern the objects from their intermixed background. This course introduces the basic concepts and principles of remote sensing, followed by an overview of airborne and space-borne remote sensing platforms and sensors. Techniques of image interpretation and digital processing of digital satellite images are also practised. The purpose of remote sensing in this course is to equip students to use satellite and airborne data to monitor land, water, vegetation, and air quality, in support of sustainable urban and regional development.
