GAME4056 Algorithms in Digital Games and Media (3 units)
Algorithms are fundamental to modern game design and interactive media. From pathfinding and procedural content generation that shape virtual worlds, to matchmaking systems, reputation systems, dynamic difficulty adjustment, in-game economies, and recommendation engines that influence player behaviour and communities, algorithms quietly structure how games are played, experienced, and monetised. At the same time, these computational processes are shaped by human decisions, cultural values, and societal power dynamics. This course introduces the core concepts and techniques of algorithms and algorithmic thinking. It equips students with foundational knowledge in algorithm design and analysis, as well as algorithmic game theory, while cultivating critical perspectives on their applications and implications in digital games and media. The overarching goal is to prepare students to become thoughtful game designers and media practitioners who can harness the power of algorithms creatively and technically, while critically evaluating their societal costs and proposing ethical, player-centred solutions.
