EDPY7020 Biopsychology and Health (3 units)

This course provides an introduction to biopsychology and health, examining the interplay between biological, psychological, and social factors in health and illness, including public health and social determinants of health. Topics include the biopsychosocial versus medical model, psychological well-being and mental health, socio-cultural influences on health, health-promoting and health-compromising behaviors (e.g., tobacco use, alcohol use), and major theories of health behavior. Students will explore research methods, epidemiology, psychophysiology of stress and pain, and the management of chronic disease and terminal illnesses (e.g., cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes), emphasizing the application of biopsychological and psychological concepts to promote healthy lifestyle, support coping, and inform health interventions within healthcare and primary health care systems. Learning activities include lectures, discussions, small-group activities, and applied projects.
