CTV 7450 Alternative Cinema (3 units)
This course will examine an array of alternative films and new art forms evolved from or related to a cinema. It aims to raise students’ creative and critical faculties through screening and studying inspiring and/or outraging films they rarely have a chance to see. Through systematic reviews of three major types of alternative cinema (experimental, cult, and exploitation films), this course questions traditional aesthetics and mores. It will also explore how film morphs and functions in video art, new media and the Internet. The students will be required to watch many films and some related masterpieces of media arts. They will be engaged in critical inquiry of these creative works after completing some reading assignments. The course looks to broaden the students’ vista and enable them to talk about influential works of film and media art in a more open and critical way.
