This course aims to explore what documentary film - as a film genre in the 21st century – is. Historical development of different film modes/styles of documentary will be studied. Ethical, philosophical, and practical issues of documentary filmmaking will also be dealt with, as part of students' professional learning.

By the end of the course the students are expected to understand the historical development of documentary film, analyse its distinct cinematic modes and models, discuss important issues in the study of documentary film.
