VART1006 Visual Arts Practice II or any GE course offered by AVA
Clay, as a versatile studio material, allows for a wide range of creative approaches. The development of contemporary ceramics seeks to push beyond traditional boundaries, imbuing the medium with new significance. This course guides students to explore possibilities beyond conventional training, encouraging a practical and experimental approach to creating ceramics. Students will experiment with clay as an artistic medium, gaining an understanding of its distinctiveness from other materials.
Students will engage in experimental ceramics, incorporating alternative firing methods and additional materials to express their creative ideas. They will learn to construct forms from clay and enhance surfaces using various techniques, balancing both aspects to achieve their intended expressions. The course also teaches a variety of surface treatment techniques, from bare clay decoration to glazing. This provides a practical foundation for addressing perceptual and aesthetic concerns related to the interplay between form and surface.
Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to develop their own means of personal expression while completing assignments focused on different techniques and skills.
