Glass blowing is a highly complex and technically challenging technique utilised in the creation of glass art in the context of contemporary visual art.
This course is a foundation course in the art of glass blowing, it provides students with the fundamental techniques and basic practical skills of working with hot glass, and illustrates various possibilities regarding how liquid glass is manipulated and transformed into both solid and hollow forms of contemporary art. This course is designed to allow students to expand their knowledge of glass blowing techniques and to explore the characteristics of hot glass blowing in a visual arts context.
This course provides illustrations and practical experiences in hot glass blowing in its various forms and applications, develops students' critical understanding of the characteristics of blown glass, and to leads to the expression of creative concepts through molten glass in the transformation of liquid glass to vessel forms. Through exposure of the fundamental glass blowing techniques, students will become acquainted with the potential of the glass blowing process from a solid gather of molten glass to a hot glass sculpture, or to blow a bubble via the pipe, and transform it to a sphere, cone, cylinder, then to a tumbler, vessel, bowl and plate.
Through practical hands-on projects, students will explore the potential of hot glass, express their concepts and designs through the characteristic qualities of molten glass, and complete their works with cold-working techniques. Besides mastering hands-on skills, the theory and material knowledge of glass will be integrated in practical making demonstrations. Creative expression and critical thinking will be encouraged through individual tutorials, group discussions, and class critiques.
