Typography is all about words; it is the art and technique of arranging letters to make written language legible, readable, and appealing to look at. As such typography represents one of the most basic challenges to any graphic designer: how to work with text as a visual medium.
Key principles of typography and practices their application will be introduced - e.g. typefaces classification and selection, grid systems, typographic conventions, typographic systems and others. While all these principles apply across digital and analogue formats, the focus of this course is on printed matter.
The course includes designing typefaces in roman alphabets. Designing a typeface does not only involve carefully studying the shapes of each letter, but also systematically building the structure of a typeface in its entirety. The ability to create unique typefaces allows graphic designers to explore typography in a micro level, and enriches the boundaries of creativity.
The teaching of graphic design computer software will not be included. Knowledge of such software is not required to complete the projects, but may be helpful.
