Drawing is the fundamental training for various visual arts subjects, with observational drawing an essential starting point in the development of many creative processes. This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and techniques of life drawing and observational drawing with emphasis on exploring artistic expressions from utilizing a variety of drawing media. The course begins with understanding specific skills to work with life model. It continues by developing manipulation of pictorial composition, colour and gestural expression, interpretation of the body and space relation, and the effects of form and distortions. The course will focus on strengthening students’ observational and drawing skills; hand-eye coordination; and to equip students with methods and techniques to accurately depict what they observe.
Students will have the opportunities to practice drawing from a life model and from observation with various drawing media through different class exercises and assignments. Traditional and contemporary concepts will be introduced, including contour, value, proportion, and composition. The form and structure of the model will be studied. The use of new and mixed media will be encouraged to explore as point of departure toward the development of personal expression. Class discussions and individual tutorials assist students to develop drawing from life as a methodology for conceptual artistic creation beyond mere representation of a perceived reality.
By introducing drawing studies of historical and contemporary artists, the course aims to develop students' knowledge and elevate their skills so they can fully explore the technique to build up their visual languages and develop their ideas. The acquired skills will allow students to draw confidently and consistently, enabling them to represent, translate and articulate their ideas through drawing.
