MUSI3106 Health and Wellbeing Through Exercise, Nutrition and Music-Mind-Body Dynamics (3 units)
This course is best described as a hands-on lecture/workshop that is heavily weighted on experiential learning and practising what we study to inform and improve our understanding. The last decade has seen an explosion of research and wide-spread public-interest in the areas of human health and wellbeing, exercise and nutrition, and the dynamic interaction between the brain and body. Likewise, there is a diverse and growing body of literature about how music and sound not only relate to brain activity and human psychology, but also how music can overcome mental blocks by bridging the conscious and subconscious mind, thus achieving practical and beneficial outcomes in human health and wellbeing. Simultaneously, there is a persistent stream of research funded by the food and beverage industries in the U.S. that is often misleading and has dangerous health consequences. Firstly, this course approaches the problem holistically and provides an evidence-based foundation for students to better understand the many factors that contribute to the current discourse. Secondly, the course draws on cutting-edge research that shows music's unique ability to bridge the gap between the subconscious and conscious mind, which is often where obstacles to achieving health and wellbeing exist. Lastly, the course builds on that knowledge in an experiential project where students apply what they have learned.
