This course explores the economics of the news media. Focusing on the diverse range of business models available to modern journalism businesses and journalists, the course aims to prepare students with the entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in the dynamic digital media landscape. We will analyse diverse business models, explore strategies for launching and managing a media outlet and examine the critical balance between profitability and journalistic integrity.
The landscape of news has been transformed since the arrival of the internet. The digital age dismantled the monopoly of traditional mass media and introduced a multitude of new players. While the shift has led to job reductions in traditional journalism, it has also lowered production costs and spurred the entrepreneurial economy, offering journalists opportunities to become independent innovators. Students will learn to establish a media venture while maintaining ethical standards and leveraging digital tools to create impactful journalism in the always evolving news ecosystem.
