The “Introduction to Spatial History” course explores a relatively novel approach to historical study, emphasising the critical role of the spatial dimension in understanding history. This course delves into the theory and practice of Spatial History, addressing related topics such as infographics and digital humanities. Students will engage in a hands-on project involving the creation of a Historical Geographic Information System (HGIS) specifically focused on Hong Kong’s history, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical context.
The course aims to highlight the importance of adopting a spatial perspective in historical studies, enhancing students’ comprehension of how geography influences historical events. Through a solid foundation in the theories and practices of Spatial History, students will acquire the conceptual and IT tools necessary for effective analysis. They will also be exposed to the latest research findings in the field, fostering a deeper appreciation for contemporary developments.
