GTSC2075 Handle with Randomness (3 units)
In this course, the nature and applications of randomness are explored from an interdisciplinary perspective. Randomness is always associated with being arbitrary, uncontrollable, and irrational. Rather than fighting against randomness, in this course, randomness is employed in various fields.
Based on some concrete examples, this course provides the student with strategies to apply randomness in real-world scenarios, foster critical thinking skills through the analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of randomness in different contexts, encourage creativity and interdisciplinary learning, and equip students with a range of adaptable schemes to solve complex problems individually or collaboratively.
Students will explore some remarkable approaches of randomness to handle important and complicated problems in financial market, management science, and survey research. They will learn how to achieve the securities of computer and communication by randomness. Students will also discover the possibility to create music in the light of randomness. They will further explore the nature of randomness via the examples of chaos and fractals.
Through this course, students will gain an appreciation for the power and versatility of randomness as a means to solve real-world problems in different fields. Mathematical skills and computer programming are not required.
