GSIS2005 Statistics for the Social Sciences (3 units)
This course is an introduction to the basic concepts, logics of quantitative research and statistical tools for analysing quantitative research data, including probability, descriptive and inferential statistics. Major topics include the measurement and organisation of data, the concepts of normal distribution and sampling, the logic of hypothesis testing, statistical relationships between variables, descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as generating, summarising and presenting data. Students will learn how to conduct data analysis using some computer software. The course will help students develop a solid knowledge basis for studying more advanced methods of quantitative analysis in social sciences in future.
