GEOG2026 Introduction to Smart and Sustainable Cities (3 units)

Cities strive to become more sustainable by adopting smart technologies to reduce its environmental footprints (e.g. geospatial data science). This theory and practice-oriented course equips students with knowledge, skills, and capabilities to understand, evaluate, and communicate multidimensional sustainability in the urban context. The key objectives of this course are: (1) to provide an interdisciplinary introduction as well as conceptual background of sustainability and resilience theory to students from an urban perspective; (2) introduce principles of geospatial data science a long with their applications to smart and sustainable cities; and (3) teach students with practical examples to establish priorities through geospatial tools and technologies in order to improve overall urban sustainability. This course aims to train students to become sustainability managers/programme coordinators/officers in public private institutions/organisations, where they can play significant roles in designing smart and sustainable cities.
