- Medium of Instruction:
- English
This is an experiential learning course.
The course’s aim is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, experience, and individualised practice of meditation and systematic action that will support and improve their wellbeing, tap their potentials, and enable them to achieve specific goals during the semester and throughout their lives. Special attention is given to a key outcome of education, namely, to improve one’s self and bring value to the community and world through service. The core objectives that will facilitate the accomplishment of this aim are that students will:
(1) Become conversant with the interdisciplinary knowledge base that informs a cutting-edge understanding of meditation, music, the brain, consciousness, behaviour, belief, emotion, illness, health, wellbeing, systematic planning and goal achievement. This knowledge base draws from core accessible materials in music psychology and music neuroscience, medical ethnomusicology, psychological anthropology, neuroscience, health and wellness studies, the humanities, cultural studies, organisational psychology, and entrepreneurship.
(2) Explore the foundational conceptual frame for the course and put it into practice: namely, how meditation, music, and related practices can harness and facilitate neuroplasticity, psychological flexibility, and embodiment to improve wellbeing, develop insight, clarify and realize one’s goals and vision.
(3) Learn and practice basic techniques and skills of meditation and the use of music and sounds for relaxation within class in individual and group contexts and share and examine their experiences together.
(4) Execute a small-group experiential service project that entails creating a systematic plan outlined by a vision, goals, objectives, and tasks, followed by a daily meditative practice that includes action steps based on the plan, journaling, and a final essay exploring and describing their experience.
