A central concern of the humanities is to understand, analyse, and interpret human experience, which is increasingly shaped by digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI). Likewise, digital and AI tools have also transformed the ways to approach humanities research and scholarship. So, it is necessary to examine the evolving relationships between digital technologies, AI, and the humanities, and particularly how digital technologies and AI reshape the various humanities disciplines. By exploring the key concepts in digital humanities and AI, students are introduced to the role and potential application of digital technologies and AI in knowledge production and communication within the humanities.
The course invites students to study the theoretical and practical dimensions of the influence digital technologies and AI have on the humanities through discussions, case studies, and hands-on exercises. It covers key concepts such as Digital Humanities, AI, Data, Text, Data Visualisation, Network, Algorithms among others. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of the key concepts in digital humanities and be familiar with the digital and AI tools and methods to engage humanities research and scholarship. They will also be equipped to critically reflect on the opportunities and limitations presented by digital technologies and AI for the humanities.
