BUSI3087 Futures Thinking: Strategic Foresight for Sustainable Innovation (3 units)
- Prerequisite:
- BUSI2035 Entrepreneurship and Innovative Thinking
How do you prepare for the future and its innovations that do not exist yet? What will the world look like in 10 years? And how do you get from here to there? The tools and knowledge from this course allow students to pinpoint trends, develop long-term future scenarios, and make better strategic choices in business.
Drawing from philosophy, social sciences, psychology, and business strategy this course is designed to help students develop strong foresight and embrace complex systems thinking, that is essential in strategic innovation management. For many people, the future comes as a surprise - or even a shock. But with strong foresight, students can avoid future shocks and be more prepared to develop disruptive innovation. They can adapt faster and become better prepared to benefit from change, instead of letting the future happen to them.
In this course, students will learn how to think about the future of industries more strategically and creatively. Synthesis, sensemaking, creativity, and visualisation are put into plausible, provocative stories about possible futures that resonate and inspire us to act differently today. Students will learn to use their preferred future to identify obstacles, recruit allies, collect resources, and plan action to make their visions real. The course is designed to help future leaders to anticipate risks, prevent unwanted consequences of their innovations, and make ethical, equitable, and sustainable strategic choices.
