Hong Kong is a globalised city influenced by Sino-Western cultural exchanges. This course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of Chinese medicine and Western medicine, in dealing with issues related to health and diseases. During the course, students will carry out experiential learning through viewing and touching of different Chinese medicinal herbs, experiencing acupuncture in the classroom and having chance of visiting the Museum of Medical Sciences in Hong Kong. Interactive tutor-guided group discussions or real-life clinical case studies will be used to facilitate the comparison of the pros and cons of using Chinese or Western medicine to disease treatment. The impacts of recent medicinal technology advances on social and economic aspects will also be discussed. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to understand basic knowledge of common health-related disorders, envisage the differential roles and approaches of Chinese medicine and Western medicine in the treatment of human diseases and their philosophy of the prevention of illnesses The course serves to fulfil university students’ need on the fundamental knowledge of Chinese medicine.
