ENGL3406 An African Experience: Arts and Cultures through Service-learning (3 units)
This course provides students an opportunity to serve and learn from local African communities. Africa is a vast continent with diversified cultures, not to mention its diaspora across the globe. Given the continent's rising economic power as well as its growing cultural and academic influences, this course is an opportunity for globally responsible students to engage with the place and its people.
A faculty member with expertise in Africa will lead students on a supervised service-learning trip to a specific African country (the choice might vary each year). Before the trip, students must participate in preparation workshops. During the trip, students will serve in an African country and study an aspect of Africa regarding arts and cultures. Students will be asked to constantly reflect on their experiences before, during, and after the trip. After the trip, students will be required to complete a term paper and an oral presentation based on the experience and knowledge they have acquired.
