SOWK4216 Special Topics in Social Work (3 units)

This course is intentionally designed to be flexible to allow discussion of a range of contemporary issues in Social Work. It will involve a range of optional electives complementary to those ordinarily offered as core courses of the Social Work major.
Special Topics in Social Work (Disability and Society) provides students with in-depth understanding of disability regarding its multidimensionality, complexity and dynamics in human functioning, and to equip students with positive attitudes and skills to respond and work with people with disabilities. It examines the various definitions of disability, and provides a general orientation and examination of current issues, different models and approaches, contemporary social policies and service practice pertaining to people with disabilities and the social inclusion process. Through this course, students will gain greater awareness and insights necessary to develop theoretical and critical thinking on issues of diverse populations in contemporary Hong Kong.
Special Topics in Social Work (Gender and Social Work) aims to provide students with a gender perspective in practicing social work. Basic concepts of gender, gender inequality and theories of feminism will be introduced. Gender issues in social work and social welfare will be critically examined. Emphasis will also be placed on understanding principles and strategies of feminist social work and their application in the local context. Students will be equipped with knowledge and skills in dealing with gender issues and working with women and men.
